About This Coin
Mother of pearl is Australia’s national gemstone. In ancient Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, it was created when a rainbow touched the earth. It is also known to Indigenous people as the ‘fire of the desert’. Today, Australia produces the overwhelming majority of the world’s precious mother of pearl, which when cut and polished can be used to create some of the world’s most alluring jewellery pieces.
The coin’s reverse features a central mother of pearl insert in the shape of the Australian continent. It is encircled with depictions of iconic marine creatures found in Australian waters, comprising (from top right) a sea turtle, seahorse, blue-ringed octopus, clownfish, starfish, stingray, and great white shark. As well as representations of marine plants, the design includes ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary in 2024, and the coin’s weight, purity, and 2024 year-date.
Each coin is presented in a prestigious timber display case within an illustrated shipper and is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
