In 2023, The Royal Australian Mint announced the new effigy of His Majesty King Charles III that would begin to appear on Australian legal tender coins. This was an historic moment, not seen in over seventy years as the effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave way to that of her son, Australia's new Monarch.

Tradition holds that all Australian coins bear an effigy of the reigning Monarch on their obverse. The new effigy of His Majesty The King by Daniel Thorne follows another tradition by facing left, the opposite direction to that of his mother.
