Australia’s history at the Winter Olympics is a remarkable story of perseverance, growth and groundbreaking achievements. Australia first competed at the Winter Olympics in 1936, sending just one athlete to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. For decades, results were modest, as winter sports lacked the infrastructure and popularity of their summer counterparts. That changed dramatically in 2002, when Steven Bradbury won Australia’s - and the Southern Hemisphere’s - first Winter Olympic gold medal in short track speed skating, in one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.

Since then, Australia has steadily grown into a respected winter sports nation. Alisa Camplin claimed aerial skiing gold just days after Bradbury, and Torah Bright dazzled with snowboard halfpipe gold in 2010. In freestyle skiing, moguls star Dale Begg-Smith and aerialist Lydia Lassila also became Olympic champions, helping put Australia on the map in gravity-defying events.
