First published as a book in 1870, this iconic maritime tale details the adventures of Professor Pierre Aronnax, his servant Conseil and seaman Ned Land as they travel the world’s oceans after being captured by Captain Nemo and taken aboard his futuristic submarine, Nautilus. Having many features that accurately anticipated those of the modern submarine, Nautilus was described by Verne as 'a masterpiece containing masterpieces' – a description that could easily be applied to this sensational new coin!
