About This Coin

Two defining moments in Australia's history of justice and reconciliation are honoured in a collectible coin. The 2026 Royal Australian Mint 50c Unity Uncirculated Coin commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the Wave Hill Walk-Off and the 50th Anniversary of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1976, milestones that permanently changed the nation's legal and moral landscape.

In 1966, the Gurindji people, led by the resolute Vincent Lingiari, walked off the Wave Hill cattle station in the Northern Territory to protest exploitative wages and conditions. What began as a labour dispute became a transformative movement for Indigenous land rights, drawing national attention and reshaping Australia's understanding of equality and sovereignty. In 1975, Prime Minister Gough Whitlam famously poured soil into Lingiari's hand at Wattie Creek, a gesture that endures as one of Australia's most powerful symbols of reconciliation. The following year, the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1976 became the first Australian legislation to formally recognise Aboriginal land ownership.
