About This Coin
Australia is home to more than 250 Aboriginal languages. The Our Animals, Our Country $1 Collection Folder and Five-Coin Set celebrates the storytelling traditions of the Gudanji/Wakaja peoples and their connection to Country, from the hills to the plains and the waters.
Each of the five $1 coins introduces an animal by its Gudanji/Wakaja name: Marraji (MAH-rah-jee), the Red Kangaroo; Jagurrugurru (jah-goo-roo-goo-roo), the Emu; Mardumbarrayi (mar-dum-bar-RYE), the Saltwater Crocodile; Darrmanji (DAR-man-jee), the Brolga; and Gulamandarrina (goo-lah-mun-dah-REE-nah), the Long-necked Turtle.
The designs are by Ryhia dank, also known as nardurna, a Gudanji/Wakaja and Kalkadoon artist and designer from the Gulf Country and Barkly Tablelands in the Northern Territory. Her work is grounded in family, memory and connection to Country, and she is an Ambassador of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Presented in a collection folder, the set is a meaningful way to share First Nations language with children and family, and a thoughtful choice for anyone looking for Aboriginal art gifts with real cultural grounding.
Available from Direct Coins, authorised distributor for the Royal Australian Mint. Trusted by collectors since 2012.
